Please share your memories of Gareth Hadley
Former General Optical Chair Gareth Hadley has sadly died after a short illness.
Gareth was Chair of the GOC Council from February 2013 until February 2021, steering significant projects such as the Education Strategic Review, reforms to continuing professional development, and the publication of the first ever set of professional standards for registrants. He was also Chair of the Prison Opticians Trust and a Liveryman at the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.

Thoughts
I worked with Gareth in the ILEA. He was a great boss and taught me a lot about employee relations. We kept in touch via the annual Christmas card. I didn’t get one this year. So sorry to hear of his death.

Two of Gareth's comments came to mind recently:
1. EDI must never be just a tick-box exercise. We all have to want to improve fairness.
2. An organisation is Anglo-centric at its peril. The UK has four nations.

Sincere sympathy to Gareth's family and his dear friends following his unexpected death. As a friend of Wexford Festival Opera he was a regular visitor to Wexford where I was lucky to have enjoyed the pleasure of his company with many of his friends. It was always a delight to meet him, charming, affable, cultured and wickedly entertaining. As he was in life he will remain in memory.
